Wilmington, DE 鈥 兔子先生系列麻豆 (GBC) has been ranked in the top 20% of the Economic Mobility Index (EMI) for colleges and universities by Washington, DC think tank 鈥 Third Way. GBC is the only institution of higher education in Delaware to achieve this ranking.
GBC President Colleen Perry Keith said, 鈥淲hen you think about GBC鈥檚 recognition on the Economic Mobility Index, we should be getting all sorts of students 鈥 we provide the value for those who need it the most. It鈥檚 not just that we happen to be affordable, it鈥檚 that we have an intentional focus on enabling the least-resourced students to come to our institution and gain an incredible life opportunity.鈥
Michael Itzkowitz, a senior fellow for Third Way, has been responsible for shaping the group鈥檚 higher education advocacy agenda. This five-tiered system was designed for comparison purposes. He said, 鈥淚nstitutions that provide the greatest economic mobility are now located in Tier 1 with other schools shown to deliver comparably strong outcomes.鈥
According to Third Way, its EMI mathematically combines two variables: 1) the amount of time it takes low-income students from a given college to recoup the costs of paying for their education, and 2) the proportion of students from low- and moderate-income backgrounds who were enrolled at each school. This updated model now incorporates the amount of federal financial aid that each of these institutions receives on an annual basis.
Recently, Department of Education Secretary Miguel Cardona said that 鈥渨e need a culture change in higher education.鈥 He said that elite rankings are 鈥渁 joke鈥 and that more attention needs to be focused on the institutions that serve the nation鈥檚 less affluent students. Cardona stated, 鈥淚t鈥檚 a cruel irony that institutions that serve the most students with the most to gain from a college degree have the fewest resources to invest in student success.鈥
Third Way is a national think tank that champions modern, center-left ideas. Their work is grounded in the mainstream American values of opportunity, freedom and security. They identify as center-left, because that space in U.S. politics offers the only real path for advancing those ideals in the century ahead.
Their agenda is ambitious, aspirational and actionable. It is built on the bedrock belief that for political movements to succeed in our political system, they must relentlessly re-imagine their policies, strategies and coalitions.
